More fallout from (one of) the roommates / Más quilombo con (una de) los compañeros de casa

For the benefit of everyone´s various languages, I´m going to post this in both English and Spanish to avoid any confusion and also some ´lost in translation´ moments. Firstly, English:

Para el beneficio de todos que entienden distintos idiomas, yo voy a publicar ésto en Inglés y Español para evitar cualquier confusión y prevenir unos momentos extraños y frases que se pueden perder con la traducción. Primero, Inglés:

More fallout from (one of) the roommates

So there´s more fallout from the ´unflattering blog discovery´ debacle. As my boyfriend was going down to the kitchen to get some breakfast, he bumped into Miriam, who had been the main ´victim´ in the less-than-flattering blogs. He says hello to her, she ignores him and rushes out of the kitchen to go straight into the bathroom and she closes the door. He comes back upstairs to tell me, which at this point I don´t care anymore. (I will mention now that I was also expecting some ´evil eyes´, as these blogs had expressed my opinions of her - and they weren´t particularly nice ones either!) The boy and I go downstairs as he left for uni and I checked to see if the bathroom was free. The door was open, so I was confident. She was in there, I say ´Oops, sorry´, she ignores me and continues brushing her hair. At this point, I cared even less and I went back upstairs to ponder if things can get any more uncomfortable.

This is my opinion of this whole thing. I am the kind of person who needs an outlet to vent because when I do vent, it can get nasty and it is unfair to rant continuously to my close friends face-to-face - it´s easier through a computer screen to people who may or may not know me (the people who do not know me far outweigh the people who do who also read this :) ) so the concept of blogging is perfect for me. And when it comes to expressing opinions or statements about people, here´s the thing: it is just MY impressions.

Firstly: I don´t have a role in public office, so it´s not like I have to be civil with these impressions.
Secondly: Despite little chats here and there whilst sharing kitchen space with her for the last 2 and a bit months, I really don´t know this girl (and from her immature actions of ignorance, I don´t WANT to know her either). Because I don´t know who she is or what she is like, my opinions of her are insignificant - it´s just a rant that I am having in MY BLOG and something that has bothered ME, not her. It will pass because it is a small moment - and it always passes - but because I don´t know her well, they are MY IMPRESSIONS. They could be wrong, but it is what I am seeing AT THE TIME. Things change, impressions change when you take the time to get to know someone - if that´s what you are looking for.

Let´s reverse roles for a minute: Anybody can say whatever they want about me and I won´t care because there are only a small handful of people in this world who REALLY know me - and even fewer people in my life whose opinions and thoughts of me I care about. I can probably count on one hand the people who fit into the latter category. (And if you are reading this Miriam, you´ll be pleased to know that you don´t fit in either of these categories). So what´s my point? If I express impressions on personalities or traits based on what little I have seen from you, no matter how hurtful they may seem, it is insignificant because I DO NOT KNOW YOU!! Get pissy (hell, you´re there already) and realise - and be thankful - that there is not long to go before I never see you again. I know I am.

Editorial Control

This is one of my first blogs of the year - mostly due to all the travelling I've been doing (you'd think that alone would be a reason to keep a regular blog). But today there was an interesting (for want of a better word) experience with my boyfriend's blog. He used to use one site (all sites and names will remain anonymous...for now! We'll call this one Site 1), but after several times of blogs not posting and other little annoyances, he switched over to another site, and has been happily blogging since (Site 2!) The only thing is that the privacy settings are much easier to control with Site 1 as opposed to Site 2 and for some reason they were not on the settings that he had hoped for in the new and better Site 2. So a few 'bitching' blogs about his roommates later, he was caught out and one of the roommates let him know that he was not happy with some of the offending blogs.

Now this raises some questions - can the people who have been bitched about demand the author of the blog to delete the offending comments? It's a little quandry - because I know when I blog, I use it as an opportunity to vent - and when I do vent I don't exactly leave a most flattering impression of the people whom I am ranting about. But after I have this rant, I forget about it and move on, happy in the knowledge that I have had an outlet for this, otherwise it would continue festering in my mind. And this makes me feel a lot better afterwards because it is just ONE small moment of pissiness. It is not ongoing and I get over it pretty quickly, thanks to my blog which allows me to vent in the first place. So back to my inital question: If I have a rant about a person and they read about it, can they ask me to delete said comments? I say no, because it was just one little moment that becomes insignificant a short while after posting. It doesn't matter anymore. Secondly, while the people may be named, they still remain unknown to the rest of the cyber world. Do you know how many people in the world are named Jessica* or Dylan*? I could be talking about Dylan from Timbuktu for all anybody knows, but then the Dylan I know reads a blog by me bitching about him being a neat freak and Dylan gets all defensive! (I'm using an example here, the only Dylan I know lived in Beverly Hills and I enjoyed watching him every week)

Fair enough, I accept that Dylan is going to get narky about it and have a little fit of "Why did you say that about me to an open audience?" I not only accept it, I EXPECT it. But what I do not expect is to be told to delete the offending posts like all of a sudden I'm a sitcom writer and am being sent to the censors. Get upset, tell me about it, I can apologise - and mean it - but I will not delete said comment. Once others have editorial control over MY blog, it will be the end of MY blog. It is MY blog for a reason. By all means, if Dylan would like to open up a blog and bitch about me, he is entitled. I can be narky, tell him about how it made me feel but at the end of the day, it is just a moment and the feeling of hurt will pass (if I cared! To some extent I do, but not nearly as much to say, "get rid of that at once")

I have said my piece. Nobody has editorial control over my blog but me. So that's what My Blog is about. I welcome your comments :)

*These are names I've just come up with and not people I know - it's just proving my point of how many people in the world have the same names!

60 MINUTES IN MANHATTAN: PLANES, TRAINS, AUTOMOBILES (AND THROW IN A COUPLE OF BUSES HERE AND THERE TOO!)

Hi everyone! Yes, it has been a long 4 months since blogging, but I have been having such a great time with the travels. Well, an interesting time. Argentina was a bit hit and miss (the miss bits unfortunately outweighed the hits, but not by much!) Chile was an absolute highlight of my entire South American venture. Spain is brilliant - mainly because I am catching up with the boy for the first time in 9 months. I am currently in Florence, Italy and am amazed at how magnificent and how down to earth a city can be. But today I am here to begin my backtracking of 4 months of travel. It won't be easy, but I have highlights - starting off in December 17, when Adventurous Andy went for a wander in Manhattan, New York. So here it is: (I wrote this 4 months ago and had forgotten half of the stuff I did. Thank you crib notes!)

60 MINUTES IN MANHATTAN:
PLANES, TRAINS, AUTOMOBILES (AND THROW IN A COUPLE OF BUSES HERE AND THERE TOO!

OK, I know I’m going out of order with my blogs, but honestly I had to tell you the best 60 minutes - and dare I say 60 of the most interesting minutes of my life that I spent in downtown New York City. In one hour I managed to be witness to some bit of petty New York crime and watch 2 muggers run for their lives (and that was in the first 2 minutes!), lots of bright neon lights (all in English this time around), made a new friend, saw NYC at its busiest at night, ate a pretzel, saw the Chrysler Building and walked and explored Times Square before having to go back to the airport. And that my friends was just the summary! Here’s how my December 17 came about:

8:00am. LOCATION: EAST TORONTO, ONTARIO. Wake up and get ready to say goodbye to Dawn and her folks and farewell to such a marvellous 5 weeks in Canada. Before I do, I get to go exploring a bit, but downtown first!

9:00am. LOCATION: DOWNTOWN OSHAWA, ONTARIO. Catch 2 buses here! (Just the start of my transportation!)

9:50am. Transfer to the express highway bus to Scarborough Town Centre, which is the ‘burb before you hit downtown Toronto. It’s a nice area, and it’s where Dave works.

11:10am. LOCATION: SCARBOROUGH TOWN CENTRE. Meet with Dave so he can take me to the airport, as it’s not far from here. And here is where I get to do some exploring on my own before going to the airport, which was nice. Got to say goodbye (yes I’m a sop, but I know I’ll be back someday!) I had such a great stay (and yes, despite my bitching of the food, but the day before we had a homemade Newfie Jigs Dinner, which is a beef and veg stew….mmmmm yummy!)

11:50 On our way to the airport by car (here’s the automobile part!)

12:30 LOCATION: LESTER B PEARSON AIRPORT, TORONTO Checking in with Judy keeping me company. I had been packing and weighing my stuff and was at the 23kg limit, so imagine my surprise when the scales said I had 53kgs. The kgs sign was on, despite it being pounds. Was told to take 3 pounds of my stuff out, which was a winter boot and a bag, which I stuffed into my backpack quite easily. Had to say goodbye straight away to Judy and she had admitted saying that thanks to me, she realised just how spoilt Dawn was and how that needed to change. So apologies to Dawn with the new and improved Judy not doing many things for her anymore (I guess I’m such a good house-guest, but I did get that a lot J ). At check in I was told to retrieve my luggage at JFK to clear customs, which is a common practice whenever going to the States, even on transit. After all that, she then said my luggage was checked all the way to Buenos Aires. No biggy, but even so I wanted to double check at JFK to make sure that my bags were indeed en route to Arg.

12:45 LOCATION: CUSTOMS LINEUP, AIRPORT. As I was in line, I hear a familiar accent behind me. It was the splitting sound of my friend Brad - I quickly turned around to see if it was him (no, it wasn’t), but I was glad to hear the Aussie accent once more. He was telling the story of when he checked in only moments before: He gave his passport, as you do, When she was done, he asked, “Where’s my passport?”. She said, “I gave it back to you”. She hadn’t. “No you didn’t”. It went back and forth, with this lady adamant that she had given back the passport. He asked if he could go through all his luggage to find it, which he did. Still couldn’t find it. She checked her work area and found it - in her rubbish bin! What a cow! I would have cracked the shits! And it turns out that a passenger who was checked in before him had the same problem, only that time she threw out his boarding pass in her bin. I don’t know what she was on! So we chatted a bit and I managed to lose him when we were going through security.

1:00pm. LOCATION: GATE 11, TERMINAL 3. Go to my gate and hang. Turns out the Aussie is catching the same flight to JFK and he joins me. We have 90 minutes before departure and we chat away, exchanging travel stories. Turns out he looks like Brad, he talks like Brad, lives in Sydney like Brad, lives on the western side of Sydney like Brad - it was too much of a coincidence. But he doesn’t know Brad L It was going to be Albert’s first time in NYC, as was mine. I told him of my plan to go to Manhattan for a while during my 6 hour layover in NYC. He said, “I might come with you”. So I had a companion, which was lovely! He had arranged for a private car to get to downtown, but was having problems with confirming it, coz when he rang the driver, he had no idea he had to go to New York. I had done my research at 1am the previous morning and found a way to get downtown in 35 minutes by train, compared to an hour he was quoted. So I told him we’d take the train, if he wanted the adventure. He was up for it, so off we planned J We both did research the night before. His consisted of maps and layouts of the subway and train network - must have been about 20 pages. Mine consisted of a scrappy A5 piece of paper, double spaced with scribbles. We laughed and loved my idea of research!

1:45pm: There’s an announcement from the airline. The flight has been overbooked and there are some weight issues with the checked and carry on luggage. They asked for 4 volunteers to get off the plane and go onto the next flight to New York, which flies into La Guardia. I don’t even know whereabouts in New York that is! As compensation, the airline would give you a US$300 voucher to use for another flight. If I didn’t have a connecting flight from JFK and if I hadn‘t have had plans to go to Manhattan, I would have taken it. A voucher to another destination would have been great.

3:30pm. LOCATION: SOMEWHERE BETWEEN TORONTO AND JFK. We were an hour late boarding and taking off, but arrived only 10 minutes after the original ETA of 4:10pm. I guess the airline anticipated there would be delays with weather and other factors, so they had in the itinerary that it would take 2 hours to fly to New York. Which is crap, coz you can drive there in less than 3 hours!

4:20pm. LOCATION: JFK. As I was told, I went to get my baggage, partly thinking that it wouldn’t be there and it would be tagged to Arg. It didn’t come. I wasn’t overly concerned about it until I saw 4 other parties on our flight who also didn’t get their luggage. And for one of them, JFK was his last stop. A lovely family from Toronto had 2 other connectors to catch to get to Uruguay. After 20 minutes we asked the airline chick what was going on and she kept blowing us off and telling us to wait, as sometimes they can mix up the baggage claim chutes (there were only 3, how confusing can it be?). So we did. An hour finally went by and we all ganged up together to talk to her. All she said was to make a claim with baggage personnel and if they find it, they will send it off to the final destination. The only problem is: we didn’t know if our stuff was taken off the plane in Toronto due to the weight issue (and if so, we were pissy as to why we weren’t told), and if it was sent on another flight to JFK, or if they were proactive enough to tag it all the way to our final destination and lucky enough not to have to claim it and clear it (although being in New York, you’d think you’d have to claim it). Because the nice family and I were going to South America, we asked again about the status of our bags. After looking at both of our tickets, she said to me “Your bags have been checked all the way to Argentina, but his bags haven’t”. He had to make a claim. I really felt for them. The couple had 2 boys and it was their first family vacation and to have this to happen to them was just rotten, especially if they did take the baggage to them a few days later, it‘s a 2 hour drive from their final destination in Uruguay. I hope it worked out for them. The others had to make a claim too. I was REALLY lucky, but I just felt for the family. And Albert was waiting with me the whole hour. I lost 60 minutes with that debacle, which could have been spent in Manhattan, but I wasn’t going to let that spoil my adventure!

6:00pm. LOCATION: IN TRANSIT TO MANHATTAN! With sheer relief that my bags were OK, and still with an appetite for adventure, Albert and I made our way to downtown Manhattan. Not hard to do, but due to my relief of being out of baggage claim, I made an error and took us to Howard Beach station, which would take too long to get downtown. We backtracked, found our way again to Jamaica Beach station and instead of taking the subway, we took the local line to downtown Penn Station that only took 23 minutes. That saved us a lot of time (as you know, I had to catch a flight in 4 hours and time was something I didn’t have). And for those of you wanting to do the same, don’t confuse Penn Station on the Long Island Rail Road (that’s the local line) with the Penn Station subway line. I was on the ball with that because even the info booth dude at the tourits information centre told us to catch the subway!

7:20pm. LOCATION: DOWNTOWN MANHATTAN! Penn Station is HUGE! In fact it looked so recognisable that perhaps I had seen it in movies or TV shows I’ve seen, because I had a dream years ago of the EXACT station: the location, even the newspaper stands. It was like I had been there before. As a result, we didn’t get lost! As we left the station and revelled in the buzz (LOTS OF PPL!), we saw 2 big guys with a handbag making a run for it. One of them almost shoved me to the ground. This happened 2 minutes after getting out of Penn. We were thrilled to see it (we felt for the victim though, who was out of sight. We had a lot of sympathy today!), but it was just another warning to be vigilant with our belongings. I promptly put my passport in my zipped pocket, locked my money up and we were on our way!

LOCATION: 7TH AND 34TH - PENN STATION AND STREET VENDORS! I hadn’t eaten anything all day, not even brekkie or lunch at Toronto. I wasn’t hungry anyway, up until I saw my PRETZEL! I’ve ALWAYS wanted to get a pretzel from a street vendor - so I did! $2 - the same price as the hotdogs were. Albert got the hot dog with mustard while I got my beloved pretzel. Tasted more bready than I expected. And smelt like sausages, til I realised it was because it was next to the hot dogs! (DUH!) We got directions from another nice family for Times Square. They had an 8 year old daughter and when she found out we were Aussie, she FLIPPED! (In the good way!) “I LOVE THE WAY YOU AND THE BRITS TALK, SAY SOMETHING!” It was so great! Albert did his best Steve Irwin impersonation and that got her going even more! She was blown away. It was nice to do that to a kid!

We were on 7 and 34, we needed to get to 7 and 43, so we just kept walking up. The closer you get, the more people you run into and the more lights you see and the more of an energetic and anticipatory buzz that you can only feel when you’re about to enter one of the world’s busiest and well known intersections. And we were happy to say that we weren’t the only ones being snap happy! There’s still a strong police presence, but after seeing the muggers, we were vigilant. We saw Macy’s along the way (where they had the Thanksgiving Day parade that Dawn had planned on taking us, but never happened). Saw a lot of the decorated Christmas windows, but with not a lot of time to peruse, we kept going. Times Square is stunning! You would normally think: it’s just an intersection with neon lights, but it’s the atmosphere that makes it. Everyone was trying their Marilyn Monroe impersonations on the air vents on the ground (even me - didn‘t quite work with jeans and a backpack!) The main attractions were on the centre island, parts of which are pedestrian friendly. And just like in Shinjuku or any place in any major Japanese town: LOOK UP, or you‘ll miss an attraction or a sign! I almost missed the Chrysler building! I didn’t have time to get a lot of great photos, but was happy just being in a place that everyone wants to go to. All the circumstances, events and obstacles that took place in order for us to finally get downtown were worth it. Even though I only spent 60 minutes in Manhattan, I saw more than I ever thought I would in such a limited amount of time. It truly is the city that never sleeps! (Even the local train lines run 24 hours. I thought it was just the subway line) New York City rocks!

8:00pm: Start making our way back to Penn Station. My flight is at 10:15 and I had generously said by 8 to start heading back, seeing as it only takes 35 minutes all up to get to terminal 8 at JFK. Said goodbye to my new friend, jealous that he had 3 more days to explore, but also feeling great knowing I’d be seeing my family and friends the following day in Arg and getting into ’Spanish mode’ for the next 6 months.

8:30pm. LOCATION: PENN STATION Catch the express line train again back to Jamaica. In the train, the lights went out 5 times! It was a very Seinfeld moment, where Elaine is on the local line on the way to a Lesbian wedding and the train comes to a complete stop with no announcement on what’s happening and her talking and yelling to herself “MOVE TRAIN MOOOOOVE”, then her bitching about this guy rubbing his leg on her. The final straw was when the lights went out and she yells “MOTHER FUCKER!” Classic! I have lived a Seinfeld moment! Maybe that’s why I liked New York so much!

Not sure when the next blog is coming, but just know that my travels have been fantastic!!!

See ya later!!

How lazy can you get?

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 3

Up again at midday. I could really get used to being lazy! Today was snowing quite heavily, so I designated it as my lazy day! It was all go go go in Canada and things will again pick up when I go to Argentina, so it is really nice to have this downtime. Dixie enjoys baking (she was a cake decorator too! And if I remember something else that she does, I’ll add it in. She really is a nice and lovely lady after all!) and she found a recipe for bread that didn’t take all day to make - even though the both of us did have all day to do nothing! I watched her make it while chatting and asking the getting to know you questions. We bummed around quite a bit, answering emails and trying to catch up with mates back home, etc. Dixie and I were talking about making Christmas cookies tomorrow, but as we were looking at all the recipes, it got overwhelming. There are so many varieties you can make, it’s just a question of what you like and what you have in the cupboard. We’ll see how that turns out. I finalised the plans with Chris in Dodgeville this weekend: I’m getting picked up Saturday morning and staying til Tuesday night. YIPPEE!

After dinner and all that jazz, I stayed up with Mike playing Wii - mainly the sports one, with bowling and golf. I hadn’t really had the opportunity to get to know Mike properly, as he went to visit Michael in Sendai just as I was leaving and I had only met him once before at my farewell party, so it was a great opportunity to get to know Mike. He really is a great guy.

See, I told you it was my lazy day!

Last Tuesday.

DECEMBER 2

Wake up at midday for the first time in a long time. But after yesterday’s full on day, I well and truly deserved that sleep in. I didn’t realise that Michael and Mike had a housemate until I saw her going out the door as I was having breakfast. Her name is Dixie and she is a very lovely and chatty lady. I think she’s quite chatty because she is not used to having company and when she saw me it was like “Wow, someone to talk to”! She runs her own business and is an all rounder. In all senses of the word. She is a computer whiz - she has her own business in writing, designing and maintaining web pages as well as side forays in her art as a photographer as well as writer of fiction - mainly werewolf stories, illustrator of books, editor…you name it, she does it. As a result she spends most of her time in her area downstairs during the day, working til sometimes 2 or 3am while Michael and Mike are at work.

It was snowing and Dixie invited me out to walk around the block (The blocks are huge here too). I didn’t realise how unprepared I was for that walk. Yes, I had my gloves, but wasn’t quite as rugged up. The weather is deceptive. The sun could be out but it will still be freezing - sometimes below 0. The boys get home around 6pm, so we all had dinner followed by some grocery shopping. First stop was a place called World Market (or Costco as they are more commonly referred to). It is a grocery/souveneir/antiques shop with all different foods and artesian pieces from around the world: wines, tables, bags, chocolates - absolutely everything. Michael and I went nuts when we saw the newly stocked Japanese section - everything you could get at the 99 yen shop you can get here (not at the same price, but still nice enough to walk along memory lane!) Michael got some Pocky and I got those boxes of chocolate coated almonds - the one from Meiji that you could get from either 99 yen shop or 7/11 - as a last resort! I remember Dawn telling me how much she missed those and how she hadn’t had any since leaving Sendai. At least I have part of her Christmas gifts for her! Michael also bought me some Vegemite. YUMMY

Next stop was a grocery store that was meant to be closing at 9pm - and we got there at 8:50. We were able to stay for as long as we liked, so it was no problem. As Michael was looking for parking, I had a chuckle because he parks in exactly the same way that Dawn does (and I guess like most ppl too, but they both have the same luck when it comes to car spaces). They start at the front working their way towards the back, so they don’t have to walk as much. They both always manage to find that perfect space closest to the door so they don’t have to walk that much: out the car door, walk straight into the shop and you’re indoors in less than 10 seconds. I was laughing to myself before telling Michael. He then said, “Dawn and I have a lot in common, that’s why we get along so well. We were both in the navy and we both love men”. Michael, Mike and I were PISSING ourselves laughing. And I’m sure Dixie would have too if she knew Dawn! After a successful night of shopping, we ate ice cream (in 0 degrees! YAY!), watched some TV before going to bed.

Tuesday, December 9

Still last Monday's blog...see how busy I am??

OK, When I left, I made it to Chicago with enough time for my connecting flight

5pm: Arrive at O'Hare, which is meant to be the busiest airport, coming second to Heathrow - and the only reason Heathrow is first is because of its fancy name (at least that's what Chris says!) I check the details of my flight to Madison. It has been delayed by 2 hours and 15 minutes. DAMN! I was cut. NOT HAPPY JAN!

Despite my pissiness I did have some saving graces with the flight to Chicago:
1. There was a 3 seater on the plane. I had the window, another guy had the aisle. Nobody claimed the middle, so the other guy and I had more luggage room. I flied United Airlines and they charge you for any checked baggage on the aircraft and as a result, everybody tries to sneak stuff into carry on. There was absolutely no room in the overhead compartments for my stuff - especially as I was the 3rd last person to board the flight. Thankfully the seat in front of me and next to me worked just as well.

2. I had the best landing EVER! It was smooth and clean. You wouldn't have thought there was a snow storm. Perhaps that snow helped. It was the PERFECT LANDING!

________________________________________________________

So I'm waiting....waiting....the guy on the flight with me to Chicago also had a connecting flight to Louisville at the same time as me. His was also delayed 2 hours and 15 minutes. His gate was near mine and I was trying to look for him - as we had got to chatting on the plane and was a nice man, and a familiar face in Chicago was all that I wanted. That airport was PACKED! There was no room at any of the departure gates to sit, as people were waiting for their flights, as all the schedules had been backed up. I ended up finding a place near the staff section with a connector for the laptop. People were sitting in the aisles, sleeping, playing on the laptop and trying to ignore babies crying. It wasn't working for me today...remember, I had been up since 5:30 and was still pissed about that. Bought water from a cow who tried to also charge me $4 for a croissant. EXTORTION! Yes, it is the airport after all, but I wasn't paying that much for food. Did sudokus, writing, wasting time productively...the usual! Now that I have an hour to go before the flight leaves, I'll just go and check the status.....

NEW GATE, NEW TIME. 8:24 is the time of departure. There's a flight scheduled to leave for Charlotte at 9:15pm that manages to leave before mine. We ended up boarding at 8:45pm. The plane is being doused with snow and ice protectors and as a result, we leave at 9:45pm. Arrive at Madison at 10:15pm. Thankfully Michael and Mike were waiting for me and kept tabs on my departure via the United website. They only had to wait 15 minutes, which was a relief, as I arrived 3 and a half hours late. But boy was I pissed and tired....up for 20 hours. Don't know how O does that all the time. I swear he's nuts.

I was happy to see the Mikes - it has been around 2 years since seeing them last. I was tired, but I just wanted to stay up and catch up with them - which is exactly what I did. We all didn't end up going to bed til 1am

Finally, Monday's blog is done. Let's see if I can catch up with the rest of the week!

Sunday, December 7

Half of Monday's blog...will finish it later!

MONDAY DECEMBER 1

5:30am. After what seemed like no sleep, I had to be up at this time. I may have only got 4 hours. All because they didn't want me to go to the airport on my own, I had to wake up this early. Still not happy Jan! Fucking bullshit, I say! Let's continue the rant [Here's a note from the present: I'm not feeling like this at all now, but I've written down in my notes the emotional state I was in, so if there are a lot of rants, just bear in mind that's what I was feeling at the time and are not a precise indication of my true feelings in the present moment. Thank-you for your attention :)] I didn't book an afternoon flight to be woken up before the sun even came up. They knew I was cut about it. It's such a shame there are no shuttle buses from Oshawa to the airport - that sucks royal donkey balls. Had to leave at 6:30 to get to Scarborough, a town just a short distance away from downtown Toronto. From there we headed to Dawn's work as she needed to pick some stuff up. Caught 2 trains to get there. We were early after all, so it wasn't an issue. I was being a complete sook and it's been a very long time since I've acted in this way. But I figure if I'm going to be treated like a kid, then I may as well act like one. I'm 26. I don't respond well to being told what to do unless I ask for it. I don't get this attitude from my own family, so why the fuck should I get it from others? [Again, I do realise in the present moment that this is just an immature sooky rant. I have been treated tremendously well, but I'm unnecessarily tired and just want to go somewhere familiar - like Argentina. I'll get better once I've settled at my destinations!] In the preparations for this trip, I've been told, "You have to be ready by 6, you have to do this, don't do that, etc". Hey, it's my life, my perogative. If I want to wake up late I'll damn well do it. I know that this ordinarily wouldn't piss me off - usually I just analyse the person whom I'm getting that advice from and analyse their own lifestyle and their circumstances - try to see where they are coming from. If I spot hypocrisy, I call it! And I do not listen to advice from people whose choices I do not agree with, therefore, this shouldn't piss me off that much. Now, I'm feeling much better about this :) Rant over!

Caught a subway and a connecting bus to the airport. I was told, "You have to check in at 1pm", even though the airline told me 1:30. "I'm going later" was my adolescent response. Due to a snow storm in Chicago, all flights were delayed to and from O'Hare. My flight to Chicago was due out at 3pm with my connecting flight flying out at 6pm. My delay for the Chicago flight was initially one hour, so it would be departing at 4pm. It got delayed further by another 30 minutes, therefore a 4:30 departure was on the cards. GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR There was no announcement of these changes, despite announcements for other airlines and their change of service. It was only because of sheer boredom that I looked up to the departures schedule. My gate was crowded, so I went to another one and tried to get the wifi set up, as they had the outlets and were advertising free wifi everywhere. It kinda worked, but the connection was unstable. I was going back and forth to my gate and saw that it was still due to depart at 4:30pm. So to be safe, I planned on parking myself at my gate at 4pm. At 3:50 I was getting bored, so I put my laptop away and slowly walked back towards my gate and while doing that, heard the faintest of announcements, "This is the final call for flight number 1109 to Chicago" - MY FLIGHT! I hoofed it all the way down to my gate. Thankfully I didn't have far to run, as I was carrying a full and heavy load with me. I was the 3rd last person to board. The plane left at 4:15pm...so close! The good news was that I was going to have an hour leeway for my connecting flight.

I'll finish this blog when I'm not so tired....there's still a lot to catch up on!
See ya then!
